Moira Burke is a Research Scientist on the Core Data Science team at Facebook, where she works on issues related to well-being, privacy, and interpersonal communication. Her Ph.D. is from the Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. She uses large-scale computation, surveys, and interviews to measure how different kinds of online interactions affect social support, happiness, loneliness, self-presentation, and job-seeking, and uses those findings to improve the experiences that people have on Facebook. Her work demonstrates the value of close-friend interactions, both online and off, and how social media are changing the composition of our social networks and interaction patterns.
Her work has won awards from the National Science Foundation, Google, Yahoo!, Facebook, and AT&T. She has published dozens of scientific papers, including many award winners, at the top venues for computer-mediated communication, human-computer interaction, and social computing. She currently resides in San Francisco.
