Alicia Keys on the Divine Feminine
My consistent spiritual practice began about six years ago, after I gave birth to my son Genesis. Like so many new moms I was exhausted, but the depletion was more than physiological; my spirit was shot. I needed to do something so I could continue to be a good mother to my children, partner to my husband, and friend to myself. My homegirl Erika suggested a Kundalini yoga and meditation retreat. She explained that kundalini energy rests in the base of your spine, and this practice would help creative, healing Divine Feminine energy rise through my body. Well – okay!

I have to be honest: the first time I tried the meditation, I was so tired that I fell asleep. But the second time, I felt a little spark. I really liked the mixture of chanting, singing and movement. Between the chanting and the singing and the rhythm and the meaning of these ancient words, I discovered a sense of peace and comfort. I started to notice a richer connection with myself, an ability to go deeper. After years of silence I could hear myself, trust my instincts, know what I wanted, know what I needed and not feel so insecure.

Once you make that kind of deep connection with yourself, your relationship with everything and everyone around you changes. As I’d hoped, I became a better mother because I was more confident in myself. I could hear what I needed and what my family needed. Same with my relationships with my husband, my mother, and definitely my work. Now I could be crystal clear, powerful and strong and not back down because I had a way to access my own intuition. I had made a genuine connection with the Divine Feminine.

I believe the Divine Feminine is an extremely powerful force within all of us. It has characteristics that we associate with mothering: it helps you grow, it helps you create, it cultivates who you are. One of the reasons we give the Earth the title of “Mother Earth” is because of the Divine Feminine. Everything grows on Earth. She feeds you, holds you, cares for you and supports you, makes sure you’re good. The caretakers among us know it requires a lot of strength and energy to do that. The Divine Feminine is all about the associations we have with a nurturing mother. And that force is within each of us, waiting to be uncoiled.

This may come as a shock to some folks in the West, because we haven’t been taught that we carry both masculine and feminine energies. We assume that if we identify as men then we have “masculine” energy; if we identify as women, we have “feminine” energy. But energy is different than gender identity; energy transcends what we experience in the physical and goes beyond that. For people of every gender identity, there is a dance between the masculine and feminine energies within. The goal is to find balance among these energies.

Because the patriarchy has positioned itself into having so much power, destroying rather than creating, we’ve lost touch with the potency of the Divine Feminine. There’s such a major imbalance in our world, and we can all feel it. A lot of us have carried that imbalance as pain and trauma for a long time, inherited from our ancestors. Some of us just had a wake-up call this past year. But the problem is not beyond repair. For so long, that overload of masculine energy has run the world, creating a lot of chaos and hate. We see it in racism and white supremacy, gender inequity, gun violence, police violence, violence against AAPI people, transgender and gender non-conforming people, LGTBQIA+ discrimination, and archaic mind states. Sometimes it feels like the world is f**ked! But to counteract it, we have to open the door to the Divine Feminine in us and its ability to repair and create. By tapping into the nurturing energy within, we can begin the transformation towards balance we’ve been searching for.

Meditation can help us do that. I’ve shared some of my meditations online, so people can see what it’s all about and realize that it’s a tool available to anyone. I like to get up at first light and take a little time to tune everyone else out, tap into the Divine Feminine, and hear myself. Usually I can find it in nature, in my children, in my travel or in my work, but in order to be my best it’s essential for me to take the time, make the space and listen to the voice that I tuned out for so long. I didn’t realize that voice – the one that speaks to intuition, empathy, compassion, peace – is also the spirit of the Divine Feminine.

It’s been an adventure to travel on this journey of self-exploration with my brother Deepak Chopra. He believes in wellbeing for everyone, as do I, and knows we could all use some extra healing vibes in this moment. That’s one of the reasons we and the team at Chopra Global put together a 21-day exploration of the Divine Feminine. It’s not just for women, although women in particular could use some wellness right now, especially women of color who faced disproportionate losses this year. The caretakers among us have to make some literal and energetic space for ourselves, nurture ourselves and invite soulcare into our lives, accept ourselves as we are and embrace our inner light.

As we climb out of the pandemic, we can use self-care and self-love to balance out the loss and brokenness around us. This is a time to create new rituals and make them a part of our daily lives. As we work together to repair economic and social injustice, we also have to take care of our soulsand the Divine Feminine is ready for us! So I encourage everyone to try our 21-Day Meditation Experience: Activating the Divine Feminine – The Path to Wholeness and make the connection between body, mind and spirit. I hope this experience will help us be our best, brightest selves, live healthier and more joyful lives, and find a piece of peace in a broken world.
